kazama's appearances;;
Chikage Kazama is the head of a noble demon family from western Japan; when the demons went into hiding, his clan was taken in by the Choshu, and so he owes them something of a debt. Up until his first appearance in the game, he was involved in politics of the demonic sort and involved in human politics as was necessary to pay his debt; he became involved with the Shinsengumi in the first place because of his involvement with the Choshu.
When not making appearances in the scenes in the game, he is either taking care of his own business or helping the Choshu along. After Toba-Fushimi, he considers his debt to them to be repaid and intends to be involved with them no longer.
July 1864
After interrogating a Choshu spy, the Shinsengumi learns that there is a meeting of imperial nationalists at the Ikedaya; however, because they had believed the meeting to be elsewhere, only a handful of men were on the scene there. They went in anyway because Kondou is bad at sitting patiently for backup, and there they encountered Kazama, Amagiri, and Shiranui. Kazama badly wounded Okita, while Amagiri wounded Toudou; Shiranui faced off with Harada, but Harada escaped without much injury.
August 1864
The Shinsengumi is ordered to help the Aizu Domain fight off Choshu soldiers who are threatening the Imperial Palace at the Hamaguri Rebellion. When Hijikata pursues the fleeing Choshu soldiers to Mount Ten'nou, Kazama interferes to buy the soldiers time to commit honorable suicide.
June 1865
While the Shinsengumi is guarding Nijo Castle during the shogun's visit to Kyoto, Kazama, Amagiri, and Shiranui appear to inform Chizuru that she is not a human - but rather, a demon; they attempt to take her with them, but their attempts are thwarted by the Shinsengumi, who quickly whisk her away to safety.
January 1867
Chizuru infiltrates Shimabara while dressed as a geisha in order to gather information about a suspicious group of men that has been meeting there. During the course of her investigation, she encounters Kazama, who humors her disguise for a short time before revealing that he knows it's her. He gives her information about a plan for an attack on the Shinsengumi headquarters being planned and gives his word as a demon to handle it himself; he keeps his word, and Chizuru wonders if perhaps she has managed to owe the wrong person a favor. (The answer is yes.)
April 1867
Kazama encounters Chizuru and Yamazaki while they're out on an errand and he's just trying to go have a drink. Yamazaki and Kazama nearly come to blows because Kazama is, apparently, not allowed to just go get drunk, but Chizuru steps in and the three of them part ways.
July 1867
Princess Sen, another demon, offers to take Chizuru off the Shinsengumi's hands for her protection; Chizuru decides to stay with the Shinsengumi, which works for Kazama because he makes another attempt at kidnapping her that night, but is ultimately stopped by Chizuru's protectors.
November 1867
Chizuru stays at the Shinsengumi's headquarters while they handled the problem of assassinating Itou; while they were gone, Kazama attacks the headquarters (again) and faces off with Sannan, because he really hates the rasetsu. He pretty much single-handedly slaughters the rank-and-file rasetsu, then continues to hold his own against the human swordsmen on the scene as well. He leaves when Saitou appears to help fight him off, citing that he was there only to buy time for someone else's nefarious plot after his attempt at getting Chizuru to go with him fails (again).
January 1868
Chizuru is separated from the Shinsengumi during the battle of Toba-Fushimi, and is found by Kazama, who rescues her from a group of turncoat soldiers that would have done her harm. He explains to her that the Satsuma-Choshu alliance has received Imperial sanction and will become the Imperial Army, making the Shinsengumi traitors to Japan; Chizuru can't believe it, and wants to stand by her friends. Princess Sen interrupts them as they are talking and after some discussion it is decided that Chizuru will accompany Kazama and Amagiri to Edo.
Along the way, they stop in a deserted house to get some rest after Chizuru gets visibly tired, and Kazama tells her a little bit more about demons.
March 1868
When they arrive in Edo, Kazama and Chizuru encounter Chizuru's father, who has become obsessed with developing the rasetsu. Kazama, who can't abide by more false demons running around, intends to kill him. Chizuru tries to stop him, saying that because he is her father he is her responsibility, and wins some modicum of respect by doing so, but Kazama is ultimately the one to kill him. Chizuru and Kazama decide to continue in their pursuit of the Shinsengumi.
June 1868
The course of their investigation takes them to Aizu, but there is no sign of the Shinsengumi there because they've already moved on. Chizuru refuses to give up, which just pisses Kazama off, and he leaves temporarily. Chizuru follows him to the ruins of a village, which turns out to have been the village Chizuru grew up in that was destroyed by humans when she was young - he tells her a little about her family and they reconcile somewhat before moving on.
June 1869
After six months of being stuck in Sendai and not being able to get to Ezo because of various circumstances, Kazama's temper grows worse and worse, but Chizuru knows how to handle him - by not taking any of his shit, basically. They bicker like an old married couple when he insists he wants three bottles of sake and she insists he should have only one, before compromising and deciding on two.
Kazama and Chizuru (finally) arrive on Ezo, where the Shinsengumi made their last stand. Chizuru finds the Shinsengumi's flag at Goryokaku, where they fought their final battle, and breaks down in tears. Kazama kisses her, apparently having grown to like her over time, and tells her that she should "come find him when she's ready" and leaves, because that's what he does.
January 1870
Six months later, Kazama shows up at Chizuru's house in Edo, where she has become a doctor - because he's an impatient little bitch and she was taking too long to come find him. He intends to whisk her away into the West and to go into hiding with her, but she insists on staying in Edo a while longer, and he agrees to live with her until then.
